Good to know
Choose a target size instead of a vague quality level. Compress PDF first tries a lossless pass (merging repeated images, tidying the file structure) at no quality cost; if that already meets your target, it stops there. Otherwise it works down a ladder of image quality and resolution settings, from very high to low, and stops at the first one that reaches your target — so you get the best quality that still fits. If even the lowest setting on the ladder can't get there without the document becoming hard to read, it says so and hands you the smallest safe result instead of quietly wrecking the file.
Frequently asked questions
Why didn't my PDF reach the size I asked for?+
If the document couldn't be compressed that far without becoming hard to read, the tool stops before that point and gives you the smallest size it could safely reach instead — clearly labelled as the closest result, not the target you asked for.
Does compressing reduce quality?+
Only as far as needed to hit your target. A lossless pass is always tried first (merging repeated images, tidying the file structure) at no quality cost; images are only re-saved at lower quality if that alone isn't enough, and the result screen tells you which setting was used.
What kinds of images can it recompress?+
JPEG images, and lossless (Flate) RGB/grayscale images — which covers most scanner and "print to PDF" output. Other encodings (JBIG2, CCITT, CMYK, indexed) are left exactly as they are.
